Is Thrift Shopping a Good Idea?

For some people, the term thrift shopping makes them cringe. Meanwhile, for others, hearing “thrift shopping” makes them squeal with delight. For the first group, the idea of purchasing items they have no idea who the previous owners and users were can be really off-putting. On the other hand, the thought of sifting through a thrift shop is akin to going on a treasure hunt.

Is Thrift Shopping a Good Idea?

We think thrift shopping is not only good, but it’s totally awesome! Let’s take a look at our reasoning for saying thrift shopping is a great idea.

Budget Friendly

Thrift shopping is one of the most budget-friendly ways you can shop. With the price of virtually everything skyrocketing, you, like so many others, may not have much left over in your expense account to purchase brand-new household items, shoes, clothes, and accessories. However, thrift shopping allows you to find quality items for a fraction of the price that they would be if they were brand new.

For example, instead of paying $100 or more for a brand new pair of jeans, you could score a pair of gently used – or even never before worn – jeans for maybe $20. Who doesn’t like getting good deals and saving money?

Larger Selection

Shopping at a thrift store really is like going on a treasure hunt. Some of the items you might find while thrift shopping include

  • Women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing
  • Fashion accessories
  • Shoes
  • Various types of household items
  • Children’s toys

You never know what you’ll find at a thrift store. Not only can you find a wide variety of items, but you can also find a large selection of brands. One benefit of thrift shopping for clothing is that you can find a wide assortment of options from name-brand designers. If you were shopping at an individual store, on the other hand, you’re limited to the select few items and brands that the retailer sells. If you like variety, then thrift shopping is definitely the way to go.

You’re Giving Back to the Community

Many local thrift stores are non-profit organizations. These organizations not only sell gently used, secondhand items, but they also give back to local charities. Goodwill is a great example, as they sell clothing, accessories, houseware, and various other items for reasonable prices. The profits Goodwill makes off of the sale of those items are then put back into the community.

This most certainly isn’t the case with traditional retailers. While it’s true that individual stores can create jobs, which is beneficial to the community, that’s typically where it stops. Stores like Target, Walmart, and name-brand retailers aren’t in business for the sake of helping the community. Instead, these businesses are mainly in the business of making profits for themselves. The fact that they create jobs is just an aside, and not a priority.

Eco-Friendly

Finally, thrift shopping is eco-friendly. When people donate their previously owned, gently used goods to thrift stores, they aren’t putting them into the trash, which fills landfills. When you purchase those items from a thrift store, you aren’t adding to the waste that manufacturers create during the process of producing new items. Furthermore, thrift shopping helps reduce materialism, which has become a significant problem worldwide.
